It’s no secret that Maplestory isn’t as popular as it was a few years ago.
But is Maplestory really a dead or dying game?
In short, there are far fewer actors in Global Maplestory than in the former. If you don’t play on one of the two crowded servers today, you won’t meet many other players.
Recently, however, Maplestory has managed to maintain its position and increase both the number of users and revenues.
What’s more, Maplestory is flourishing more than ever in South Korea.
Is Maplestory a dying game?
Most people who remember Maplestory as a full player played the game more than 10 years ago.
In mid-2011 Maplestory started the descent to a much smaller player base.
This decrease in the number of players is mainly due to important changes in the game, including a potential system, a Big Bang update and more attention to content in later stages of the game.
Of course, there are also other factors that have affected the decline of Maplestory players, such as the release of new popular video games, as well as the growth of a number of major Esport-based games.
The following graph illustrates the evolution of the number of searches on Maplestory from January 2004 to January 2021, which can be interpreted as a reflection of its popularity.
Since Maplestory lost its popularity, the number of searches has not resumed.
However, the rate at which the amount of waste has increased has decreased significantly around 2015.

The population of the Maplestory MMO Maplestory estimates that in January 2021 there will be about 285,000 daily players.
Another indicator of the number of players in Maplestory is the number of players playing via Steam.
Although a very small percentage of Maplestory players play the game via Steam, the overall increase in the number of active players from January 2015 to January 2021 shows that the total number of Maplestory players has increased.

These figures are also consistent with an interesting statistic that shows that sales of Nexon’s Maplestory in North America and Europe grew 173% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2020, source.
This enormous growth in turnover is partly due to an increase in the number of players in the region, as well as an increase in the average turnover per paying user (ARPPU) of 52% per year.
Although Maplestory has grown in recent years in North America and Europe, these two regions only account for approximately 8% of Nexon’s total sales, while South Korea, China and Japan account for approximately 85%.
Another noteworthy fact is that the Korean version of Maplestory, as well as the mobile version of Maplestory M, managed to break a new record in the third quarter of 2020, becoming the strongest selling quarter since its release.
Maplestory has joined the very popular K-pop genre and has been working with the most popular K-pop band BTS since the end of 2020.
All the BTS videos that Maplestory tell and play have generated several million views, which has undoubtedly brought a significant number of users to the game.
As part of Maplestory’s partnership with BTS, players of the game were able to purchase various BTS articles and participate in events.
Other notable developments related to Maplestory are the closure of the global version of Maplestory 2, which was finally released on the 27th. May 2020 has come to a standstill, as has the growing popularity of the mobile version of the game, Maplestory M, which reached more than 16 million downloads by mid-2020.
