After much delay and even more waiting, Cyberpunk 2077 will finally hit shelves in December 2020. In time, we can look back at what may be one of the most controversial video games of all time. On the one hand, if you played on a decently powerful PC, as we did, you could have a good time. On the other hand, if you played from a PS4 or Xbox One base, chances are your experience wasn’t as good.
The issue of these systems, as many viewers have said, is one of immaterial distance. Cyberpunk 2077 is an extremely complex game that puts pressure on aging console systems. This is what has happened in intergenerational games, but it is not always a guaranteed outcome. For a more positive illustration of cross-platform performance there are many examples, but for simplicity, let’s use online bingo.
Perfect Online Bingo
When you browse online bingo games like the ones at bingo.betfair.com, you are spoilt for choice. From Helter Skelter to Cash Cubes to Deal and No Deal and many more, the abundance of games here covers a wide range of themes and designs. Also, unlike Cyberpunk, these are games that work very well on older systems.
Much of this undeniable link has to do with Bingo’s relative simplicity compared to Cyberpunk, of course, but there’s a better reason. The reason for this is to understand the broader context of user platforms. According to a report by cnbc.com, the average length of time a phone was used for an upgrade in 2016 was 22.7 months. By 2018, this had increased to 24.7 months.
For bingo developers, this clearly illustrated the range of devices they can use. They knew what power they had to work with, so combined with the simplified bingo game, they could easily create an experience that suited everyone.
Cyberpoint test
The reality of how generations of consoles work throws a chill on cyberpunk plans. Mobile phones break down on average every two years, but for basic consoles the delay is much greater. The PS4 launched in 2013 and has an installed base of nearly 110 million units, according to forbes.com. Instead of bridging the technological gap of about two years between the systems, as is the case with mobile devices, CD developer Projekt Red had to bridge the seven-year gap between the PS4 and the PS5.
Basically, they are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Should they trim the experience and limit the game’s capabilities on advanced systems so it works better on a larger install base? Wouldn’t it be better to look to the future and invest your legacy in how the game will eventually unfold, rather than how it was immediately received? Right now we know they chose the latter option, but the reality is that there have always been problems.
Hey, Chumbas! Today is Day Zero, and thanks to you #Cyberpunk2077 now holds the title for the largest number of concurrent viewers for a single player game! And it managed to make it into the top ten games of all time for most viewers. pic.twitter.com/jrEOkBOmAv

Online bingo, for all the platforms it reaches, and the success it experiences, clearly has an edge in these scenarios. Cyberpunk 2077 is unfortunately born of a complex industry and era. This could serve as a warning to developers in the future, and CD Projekt Red could still turn the situation around, but the damage may have already been done. It’s an interesting story, and it’s just a consideration in the complex environment of current development. At the very least, it should help raise the level of play across generations. There are good reasons why Bingo works well on older devices and not on Cyberpunk 2077, and these reasons go deeper than you might think.
