Though it did not meet the hoped for $35 price point, the Aakash (sky in Hindi) by Datawind at Rs.2,999 ( about $60) has a chance to connect India’s rapidly emerging urban population to those living at the fringes of this burgeoning superpower.
Taken at face value the Aakash does not seem like much. The 800×480 resistive touch screen along with the 366 MHz Connexant processor (running Froyo) pale in comparison to the recently announced Kindle Fire, however as Human Resources Development Minister Kapil Sibal stated, “This is not just for us. This is for all of you who are disempowered.” Subsidizing and mass producing this device places the internet and basic technologies at the fingertips of a new generation who must survive in a rapidly tech-savvy work environment.
