Android grabs 30% of tablet market share, up from 2.9% a year ago.
Market research firm Strategy Analytics has released a report stating that in Q2 of 2011 Android jumped from a 2.9% share to 30% of the global tablet market. Apple’s iPad dropped from a 94% share to 61.3%. Windows tablets were 4.6%, followed last by the BlackBerry Playbook with 3.3%. This might surprise many who considered Android’s Honeycomb tablet dead in the water. With a host of new tablets hitting the market just now, and others ramping up production, it would be no surprise if Android jumped to 40%-50% of the market by Q4.
This is just one report, so many will challenge these findings. We should see the release of several more reports from different firms over the next few weeks which should give us a better overall picture of the tablet market. These reports may be the boost Android needs to get developers to put out more tablet optimized apps. The new kid in town is the HP TouchPad and we won’t find out until after Q3 ends in September if it shakes up the market in any sort of way.
