The Acer Iconia Tab A500 has been lagging behind the other major Honeycomb tablets when it comes to updates.  The Motorola XOOM and the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer have been enjoying it for a few weeks now. The official release of 3.1 for the A500 is set to start any time now. Specifically with Germany getting it starting on July 5th.

Some enterprising individuals were not willing to wait for Acer to supply the update though. An official looking update has been found and passed around over on XDA-Developers. This update can be flashed to unrooted or rooted devices. It seems to provide all of the benefits of Honeycomb 3.1 like resizable widgets, browser improvements, USB device support improvements, among other things.

This new version has already been rooted and custom ROMs are being built off of it.

If you should decide to use this remember that it is a leak and it might be possible that further updates from Acer will not work. However, if you just can’t stand the idea of not having the latest and greatest feel free to follow the link and give it a shot.
