Microsoft UK managing director Ashley Highfield has told Pocket-Lint that they won’t produce a tablet centric version of Windows until they have something that sets it apart from the other offerings out there. He considers Microsoft the underdog in the tablet market. He also doesn’t see the Apple iPad, Android tablets, BlackBerry PlayBook, or the HP TouchPad as competitors to their PC market.

While Windows 7 tablets do exist they are few and far between. They are also plagued with a non touch intuitive UI and very short battery life. Many manufactures have been working on touch based UI overlays for Windows 7, but they don’t help when it comes to normal Windows software that was not developed for touch devices. It seems the rumors of a Windows 8 tablet by end of 2011, early 2012, we very premature.
